Breathe
I got the blues again today
I got the blues again today
Maybe if I hold my breath I could save oxygen
I got lost again today
I got lost again today
In visions of dreams that I'd had of you yesterday
They killed a man today
They killed a man today
Upon a cross up on a hill so very faraway
I got saved again today
I got saved again today
Loose talk may take the lives of many innocent men
I got loved again today
I got loved again today
Somehow it's not enough to wash the sorrow away
I found peace again today
I found peace again today
Storm clouds had reigned and left this soul in disarray
I can breathe again today...
I got the blues again today
Maybe if I hold my breath I could save oxygen
I got lost again today
I got lost again today
In visions of dreams that I'd had of you yesterday
They killed a man today
They killed a man today
Upon a cross up on a hill so very faraway
I got saved again today
I got saved again today
Loose talk may take the lives of many innocent men
I got loved again today
I got loved again today
Somehow it's not enough to wash the sorrow away
I found peace again today
I found peace again today
Storm clouds had reigned and left this soul in disarray
I can breathe again today...

Bottleneck Slide
I saw you in the gutter and I heard you mutter that you'd had your stomach pumped four times already this week. The night nurse that saved you, well, she really was an angel who you said would never label you an alcoholic bum, trash or scum. And even when your bile, so terribly defiled, stained your thin-lipped grin - she'd wipe you down and cut you a line just so you could get on your feet to sing. Well, you'll never be a saint and you may never be great but you've got a tune inside and a bottleneck slide just to give you a little peace of mind. So, if the sun don't shine and you're rotting inside you know you might find salvation, in a gutter, with a bottle at your side... bottleneck slide.

A Mile To Go
Do you remember when Pepper said he knew a man who killed himself behind his shed because he couldn't go on living a life that had gone so wrong; and do you recall those times just writing rhymes because we had nothing much better to do, or the day we two fought with fists that thumped and words that swerved then seared and burned the love we had because it was true? Time stopped then but no mourners came to weep over shredded northern souls. And although broken hearts still beat in time and wide clear eyes still shine with the madness which is deep inside we have changed, as well we might, and travelled across space and time.
